The stop-over in Crozet was a day and a half long. On Saturday, November 14 around 3pm, we left for Kerguelen. One last look at all those beautiful penguins who are always there, swimming, hopping and diving into the water next to the boat. I will miss them ...
The weather is really amazing, there is very little wind and it's lovely and sunny. We wave goodbye to our friends on Crozet from the back of the boat wearing T-shirts!
It's a strange feeling to leave all those people behind ...
On the way out, we followed the coast of the East island, it is very impressive.
The Crozetians see the west coast of this island opposite the base every day for a year, without knowing what it looks like in its entirety. (Attention Crozetians, spoilers!)
Expected arrival at the Port-aux-Français is Monday, November 16.
We are still travelling at high speed, to catch up on time. We are between the 40th and the 50th parallel and yet the sea is not too rough (roaring 40s and howling 50s ..?). Some are wishing for a storm, but in my case, I'm very happy like this! I can enjoy the boat, the beautiful days contemplating the sea and enjoy the evening events.
On Monday, November 16 around 1 p.m., we see the first islands of Kerguelen under the fog. We spent the afternoon along the south coast of the island, bordered by snow-capped fjords and rocky mountains. Kerguelen is really huge!
A multitude of birds follow us, each more beautiful than the next.
This species is a Cape Petrel.
A black-browed Albatross.
At 5pm the helicopter transferred a team of scientists and supplies to the black-brow cabin where they will study black-browed albatrosses.
We can see the Port-aux-Français base!
We should be able to disembark at PAF (Port-Aux-Français) on Wednesday and Thursday.
I can't wait!!
